Important Worship Service Update: Dec 15 2020

We, at the Waterbury Church, have been abiding by all the safety guidelines from CDC (social distancing, wearing masks inside the building, no physical contact, avoiding sharing or passing of materials and so on) in order to conduct our limited worship service at the building.

So far, we’ve been blessed with the opportunity to provide services both in-person and online. However, one of the members of our church family who was in the building on Sunday, December 13, tested positive for the Covid virus today, Tuesday, December 15. This person’s test was part of normal testing associated with their work.

We have conducted some “contact tracing,” and the members who were in close proximity have been contacted immediately and advised to proceed accordingly. In an effort to be sensitive to this information, we aren’t broadcasting the name of the individual. That person was very forthcoming and did alert the leadership of the congregation as soon as possible. Should you have any concern and need more information, please reach out to one of the elders (Ralph Mastrianna, Stan Gowing, or Jim Sanzone) or to Donny Pierre.

Although we have been taking all the necessary precautions and following all the CDC guidelines, this incident reminds us of how real this virus is, and how close we can be to it and not even know.

In an abundance of caution, we are going to suspend in person classes and worship for the next week, see the dates below:

  • Wednesday, December 16
  • Sunday, December 20

Our worship will continue online at the church website and our YouTube channel at the normal time of 10:30am.

The leadership will evaluate our in-person worship schedule for the following weeks and will post updates on our website,, flocknote emails, twitter, and facebook pages.

Please continue to pray for those affected by the covid virus, and for our community to remain safe, and for God to continue to bless our work and service in Waterbury.

Christmas Weekend In-Person Services – Dec 27th 2020

In order to accommodate a higher attendance over the Christmas holiday while keeping with the current restrictions, we are considering two in-person worship services on Sunday, December 27th at 9am and 10:30am.

This will enable more people to come to the worship service while still maintaining a safe distance in the church.

In order to keep the numbers in check, we have a simple signup form to reserve a seat for the in-person worship services.

Here’s the link to the form:

Once you get to the page, select your preferred time to attend worship in-person on Sunday, December 27. If we don’t have enough sign-ups for the services we will consolidate the Early service into the 10:30 service. Please be considerate and only reserve seats that you intend to use to make room for others.

This plan is subject to change based on any upcoming guidance changes from the CT State Gov’t.

Our 10:30am service will still be broadcast on YouTube and from the church website as normal

2020 Christmas Toy Drive Update

We will be dropping off the Christmas toys for the Wilson School in Waterbury on December 10th.

Please bring your toys by the church on Sunday Morning, December 6th, or reach out to Jim Sanzone (email/text/phone) to arrange a pickup on Sunday afternoon.

Updated State Guidance for Worship Services – Oct 8th

Good news, the State of CT has issued new guidance for worship services, effective on October 8th. With a new limit of 50%, that means we should be able to worship with up to 125 in the upper auditorium.

On October 8, 2020, Governor Lamont issued Executive Order 9F which provides:

  1. Amendments to Size Restrictions on Certain Gatherings. Effective on October 8, 2020, Executive Order No. 7TT, Section 2 is amended to provide that religious, spiritual, or worship gatherings, if held indoors, are limited to no more than 50 percent of the building’s capacity or a maximum of 200 people, whichever is lower, and such services, if held outdoors, are limited to the number of people that can be accommodated safely by the venue or location provided that all persons present wear masks, unless speaking from designated safe locations, and that a distance of 6 feet is maintained between all persons or groups not from the same household.
  2. Extension of Drive-In Worship Services and Graduations. The provisions of Executive Order No. 7XX, Sections 1 and 2, regarding drive-in religious and graduation ceremonies, shall remain in effect.”

Hope to see you at worship this coming week!

Quick update on COVID-19 guidelines for houses of worship

There have been some questions recently about what the guidelines are that churches are following, and some confusion about the recently announced fines for gatherings above 25 people. Good news that the 25 person limit is not intended to apply to houses of worship.

Here’s a link to the State of CT document outlining the current guidelines for churches…

The important note from the document is…

“Effective immediately, the 49-person limit on religious, spiritual and worship gatherings is raised for indoor gatherings to 25% of capacity of the indoor space or a maximum of 100 people, whichever is smaller, and to 150 people for outdoor gatherings, provided in each case that appropriate safety and social distancing measures shall be employed. ”

The church building is currently set for a capacity of ~250 people in the main auditorium, and another ~50 in the classroom space. Following the current guidelines, that works out to ~70 people upstairs, and another ~10 people downstairs.

If at some point we do exceed the main auditorium capacity, the plan is to spread out a bit downstairs with our TVs to ensure we keep things safe and comfortable for members attending.

Hope to see YOU this Sunday.

Christmas in July…remembering a dear friend

You may be thinking “who’s even thinking about Christmas in times like these?!” For most, focus is on the unusual times we are living in that carries pressures, worries, and tensions we deal with to one degree or another. And, it’s summer with high temps and sun rays. So Christmas? What gives??

An expression of love is being shown to the Waterbury Church of Christ through the Dominguez-Porrini family.

As a way to keep living out Jeannette Porrini’s joyful and generous spirit, her surviving family is dedicating the month of July to raise donations that will go toward the church’s Annual Gingerbread Event and other ministries in this church.

Jeannette was a beloved member of the Waterbury church and often remembered by her warm smile, laughter, and caring ways. Jeannette really enjoyed the Gingerbread Event. Her family is grateful for the laughter it brought out then and still today as they recount a bit of shock after she participated the first time: “They had power tools and lights there!!” is a memorable quote Jeannette exclaimed with laughter.

It’s with these fond memories and the family’s desire to spread love in the community that we have Christmas in July. Despite July being a bittersweet month (marking both her birthday and her transition to God after a 9 year battle with cancer) the family is feeling blessed to come together to bring good and also to be strengthened as a result.

Donations that exceed the costs of our yearly event will be used to bring some comfort to families impacted by cancer.

Anyone can give a donation by clicking here and selecting Gingerbread Party or feel free to mail non-cash donations to the church at:

Plan to Return to Worship

In light of the recent Coronavirus pandemic, we have been meeting completely online for the last 2 months.  The church leadership has been working to get us back together worshiping in the building, but in a safe and orderly way.

Our plan as it currently stands is to begin a gradual return on Sunday, June 7th at 10:30am for our worship service.   We will continue to broadcast our services from the church website and on YouTube to accommodate and respect those who are not ready or able to come back to the building.

We will also continue to observe all social-distancing recommendations that the state and local authorities are making.  Specifically, we should keep the number of total attendees to under 100 at this time.  We also ask members to follow the initial precautions and considerations to ensure safety while respecting the comfort of those attending.

Here is the plan, beginning on Sunday, June 7:

  • Worship Service is to begin at 10:30am.  The rear door will open for entry at 10:20am.
  • There will be no classes, children’s church, or angel watch offered.
  • Older/At-Risk Members should still consider staying home and participating online.
  • Families with young children should consider whether they can manage to maintain social distancing for safety and comfort of others.
  • All online classes and services will continue as they have for the past two months.

Initial Precautions & Considerations:

  • Face Masks will be REQUIRED for worshippers, for your own protection and out of respect for others.
  • The kitchen is closed, water bottles will be provided outside of the kitchen.
  • Bathrooms for emergency only, if possible.
  • Seating will be only every other row and with the members of your household
  • Doors will be open for contact-free entry/exit – Enter at REAR door and Exit FRONT Door
  • No Physical Bulletins will be printed, they will continue to be emailed
  • Electronic prayer requests only (no prayer cards)
  • Communion kits will be on a table in the rear, please take yours as you enter the building
  • Offices and Classrooms remain off limits.  Please stay upstairs.
  • Online giving will continue but a basket will be present as you exit for physical donations.

We look forward to seeing you on Sunday, and while it will take some time for us to return to “normal”, your patience and understanding for the new procedures will be very much appreciated. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact the elders or Donny or send an email to
