When we make the commitment to have a disciplined spirit, we are laying a foundation to be more faithful and fruitful in God’s will, ways, and work. So many see success in any endeavor as a matter of one’s abilities, skills, and talents. Indeed, competence is basic to accomplishment. But self-discipline is essential to achieving so many of life’s aims and goals. This week, take the time to read over Paul’s remarks in 1 Corinthians 9:19-27. Come on, pour over this text in one of your daily devotions. It will provide invaluable insight into what made the apostle Paul so faithful and fruitful in the missional work God had called him to do. Paul sized up the spiritual character and effective labor of his life by calling attention to the all-important trait of self-discipline. It’s true! If you desire to press forward, and be more focused, and more productive, in what God has called you to be and do, then make the commitment to grow in self-discipline. Mediocrity, low performance, underachievement, and even outright failure, are often traced back to the lack of being disciplined in what it takes for goal accomplishment. Discipline deals directly with the problem of procrastination, it takes on the problem of sloth and inattention to duty, and it works to keep us laser-focused on the rewards and joy of reaching the finish line in what we are pursuing. Again, read Paul’s insights in 1 Corinthians 9:19-27, and ask God to guide you to be more self-disciplined in your life and labor before Him. God Bless! VHH
